Community Work (UCSG)

We are developing a few resources on our website: www.urbanchurches.org.uk/communitywork.htm

There is also a helpful list of resources on the URC National website, although I did notice it is a bit out of date in places: http://www.urc.org.uk/what_we_do/crcw/resources/further_information_on_resources

This link to a URC church in Bolton gives a good description of the CRCW programme and its philosophy in a particular context: http://buildingbridgesintongemoorbolton.co.uk/whatisacrcw.aspx

The Livability community mission website is also an useful source of resources and a regular newsletter http://www.communitymission.org.uk/

There is guidance on the URC website This link will take you to the appropriate page but please heed the warning at the top of the page: http://www.urc.org.uk/what_we_do/plato/plato

If you look at the lists under Guidelines, in the first section, headed "Safety" the sixth item is "Food Safety", click on this and you will download a Word document that you can print out and keep for reference. Local authorities differ in their requirements for premises to be registered and so the first thing is "check with your local authority" and do what they say.

For Training Courses we have used try the one by J.O. Training, web link: http://www.foodhygienecd.net/ If you wished to use it you should ask your environmental health officer if it is acceptable to them.

Windermere Centre

The Windermere Centre 2010 Programme

I have just spent the weekend re-vamping and updating the Centre website with the 2010 Programme details.  If you click on the Programme 2010 page in the navigation bar, you’ll be able to use a special new feature: you can read the programme and the brochures as a booklet online.  It’s much more convenient than having to scroll through a document!

Please look through the Programme and see if there’s anything that would benefit you or your Church.  You’ll see details of courses related specifically to Vision4Life, as well as others.  Some of those are geared towards the Year of Prayer; others anticipate and prepare you for the Year of Evangelism.

If you’re thinking about establishing a Church website, look at what iChurch has to offer.  If you want to stay up to date with news from the site, use the subscription button in the sidebar.

We spend a great deal of time (and money!) putting together courses that will resource you and your Church in mission.  Please use the Centre; after all, it’s your place!  So see what 2010 has got to offer ... and please, spread the word!

 With every best wish

We’d be most grateful if you might help by passing on details about this new course – in your newsletters, e-mailings and via your website (perhaps with a link to www.yorkcourses.co.uk) And if you’re willing and able to display copies of our printed leaflet for your visitors to browse/take away, please do let us know.

Attached is a JPEG of the Handing on the Torch course materials plus a pdf of our leaflet – feel free to use these as you see best, even for advertising.

At www.yorkcourses.co.uk you can listen to soundclips from each of the contributors and read sample pages from the booklets.

York Courses have been producing study courses for ecumenical use for 15 years. Our easy-to-use courses bring the voices and opinions of prominent Christian thinkers into discussion groups in more than twenty countries worldwide.

Course details below:

HANDING ON THE TORCH – Sacred words for a secular world

Archbishop Sentamu (97th Archbishop of York), Clifford Longley JP (Roman Catholic writer and broadcaster) and Rachel Lampard (Methodist Adviser on political and social issues) are among the distinguished contributors to the new Lent course CD from York Courses. Dr David Hope introduces the course and Bishop Graham Cray provides the thoughtful closing reflections on the CD.

Canon John Young has written the course booklet for Handing on the Torch – Sacred words for a secular world. Each of the 5 sessions offers a good selection of stimulating questions aimed at engaging every group member.

Course synopsis:
Christianity is the largest movement our world has ever seen. It continues to grow at an immense pace – especially in Asia (including China), Africa and Latin America. At the same time, Christianity in the West struggles to grow and – perhaps – even to survive. In this course we consider some of the reasons for this and what it might mean for individual Christians, for churches and for Western culture, in a world where alternative beliefs are increasingly on offer.
